THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE LOST POWER LAST NIGHT WHEN STRONG WINDS BLEW THROUGH THE AREA! BY 10:00 THIS MORNING, DP&L AND OHIO EDISON CUSTOMERS HAD THEIR POWER RESTORED…ALL BUT A FEW HUNDRED. THE OUTAGES BEGAN WHEN WIND GUSTS TOPPED OUT AT 40MPH. MONTGOMERY AND GREENE COUNTY RESIDENTS ALSO LOST POWER WHEN A TRANSFORMER FAILED AND AFFECTED 4,000 HOMES AND BUSINESSES EARLIER IN THE EVENING.

BECAUSE OF THE ICY CONDITIONS LAST NIGHT AND THIS MORNING, SEVERAL ACCIDENTS OCCURRED THROUGHOUT THE MIAMI VALLEY INCLUDING ONE IN HUBER HEIGHTS WHERE SIX VEHICLES SLID OFF SOUTHBOUND OHIO 4 THIS MORNING. ONE PERSON WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL WITH INJURIES NOT CONSIDERED LIFE-THREATENING.

TWO DAYTON PUBLIC SCHOOL BUSES WITH STUDENTS ON BOARD GOT STUCK ON ICY SIDE ROADS THIS MORNING. ACCORDING TO WITNESSES, KENSINGTON DRIVE AT ST. JAMES AVENUE WAS A SOLID BLOCK OF ICE.

IN MIAMISBURG, EMERGENCY CREWS RESPONDED TO A CRASH ON AN ICY ROADWAY, ALSO SPUN OUT ON BLACK ICE ON THE WAY TO THE CRASH. THE DAYTON DAILY NEWS SAID THE FIRST CRASH WAS REPORTED AROUND 3:45AM. THEN A FIRE TRUCK FROM THE MIAMI VALLEY FIRE DISTRICT ACCOMPANYING THE MEDICS TO THE SCENE OF THE CRASH, SPUN OUT ON HEAVY ICE ON THE ROAD AND CRASHED. AFTER THE FIRETRUCK HIT THE PATCH OF BLACK ICE, IT SLAMMED INTO A UTILITY POLE. TWO FIREFIGHTERS WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WITH INJURIES.

THE TREMONT LANDFILL HAS BEEN IN THE NEWS OFF AND ON THROUGH THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS. SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE JOHN BOEHNER IS DISAPPOINTED WITH THE U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY’S LACK OF ACTION AT THE BARRELL FILL ACCORDING TO A REPORT IN THE NEWS-SUN. THE BARREL FILL IS AN 8.5 ACRE SECTION OF A CLOSED LANDFILL FOR INDUSTRIAL WASTE BARRELS THAT CONTAIN AN ESTIMATED 1.5 MILLION GALLONS OF HAZARDOUS WASTE BURIED IN THE GROUND. LOCAL OFFICIALS BELIEVE HAZARDOUS WASTE IS LEAKING FROM THE SITE IN TREMONT CITY, WHICH SITS NEAR THE AREA’S DRINKING WATER AQUIFER THAT SERVES 82,000 CUSTOMERS IN CLARK COUNTY. BOEHNER SAYS ALL LOCAL AGENCIES WANT THE BARRELS REMOVED FROM THE SITE, INCLUDING THE CITY, COUNTY AND OHIO EPA, BUT THE U.S. EPA HAS PROPOSED A DIFFERENT CLEANUP PLAN OF DIGGING UP THE BARRELS, ADDING A LINER, THEN PUTTING THEM BACK IN PLACE. THE GOAL, BOEHNER SAYS, IS FOR COUNTY AND CITY OFFICIALS TO BE COMFORTABLE WITH THE CLEAN UP PROCESS…AND SO FAR THEY HAVEN’T BEEN.
