Following Obama, Kerry to donate part of salary
(FROM DAYTON DAILY NEWS) Three Cabinet secretaries became the latest senior administration officials to give back part of their salaries, in the spirit of government spending cuts.
The announcements that Secretary of State John Kerry, the richest Cabinet member, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew will voluntarily reduce their pay came a day after President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said they’d return 5 percent of their paychecks to the Treasury.
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Kerry, however, will give his 5 percent to a charity for department employees. She said he already makes significant charitable donations.
Kerry makes $183,500 this year. His donation is worth $9,175.
Jackson schools unhappy about loss of Jesus painting
(FROM COLUMBUS DISPATCH) JACKSON, Ohio — Jane Bragg recalls walking past the painting depicting Jesus nearly every day for four years as a member of the Jackson High School class of 1963.
It was a simpler, less-ambiguous time. Each day included a classroom Bible reading, and a prayer was a staple of morning public-address announcements.
The Bible and prayer soon vanished amid U.S. Supreme Court rulings on religion and public schools. But the large painting depicting Jesus, a fixture in the school since 1947, survived Bragg’s high-school graduation and the next half-century.
The painting came down just after 8am Wednesday morning. Superintendent Phil Howard sadly watched as a teacher and two students removed it from a wall at Jackson High School and placed it in storage.
4 Springfield road projects cost $4.4 million
(from News Sun) SPRINGFIELD — The city of Springfield has plans to spend about $4.4 million in grant and local money on four road projects, including widening and adding a turn lane to a narrow, congested street.
The projects will repair sections of Middle Urbana and Burnett roads, and Grand and Belmont avenues.
The largest project — Middle Urbana Road — will cost about $1.9 million and is expected to begin in July 2017 at the earliest. The project will widen the two-lane Middle Urbana Road, adding a center turn lane from Villa Road to Ohio 334.
Dr. Dan Bragg, superintendent at Emmanuel Christian Academy, located off of Middle Urbana Road, was happy to hear about the project, especially as the school continues to grow.
It has about 530 students in kindergarten through 12th grades and expects to have about 550 next year. The school has 10 to 12 buses on site throughout the day, and also has parents dropping off and picking up children.

(from CN.EDU) Throughout his ministry, the Reverend Billy Graham has earned many titles and recognitions: evangelist, author, minister, and spiritual advisor to U.S. presidents. Carson-Newman University felt one title was missing. On March 22, the Jefferson City, Tennessee, school named Mr. Graham, “Evangelist of the 20th Century.”
The recognition was presented to Graham at his home in Montreat, North Carolina, by Carson-Newman University President, J. Randall O’Brien.
President O’Brien said the decision to present Graham with the prestigious honor was a unanimous decree from the University’s Board of Trustees.
