First Day of Spring 2013: Vernal Equinox
Spring begins with the vernal equinox at 7:02 A.M. (EDT) on March 20, 2013 in the Northern Hemisphere. Here’s more about the start of spring, signs of spring, and stunning spring photos!
The Vernal Equinox
Ah, spring! This season brings increasing daylight, warming temperatures, and the rebirth of flora and fauna.
The word equinox is derived from the Latin words meaning “equal night.” Days and nights are approximately equal everywhere and the Sun rises and sets due east and west.
(FROM DAYTON DAILY NEWS) WARREN COUNTY — An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper who was hit by a vehicle Wednesday night was showing signs of improvement on Thursday afternoon.
Twenty-six year old trooper Brent Hill suffered head trauma and extensive injuries to his leg when he was hit by a car driven by 22 year old Andrew T. Combs of Vandalia while investigating another crash on northbound Interstate 75 near milepost 36.
OSHP SPOKESPERSON Lt. Anne Ralston said on Thursday he was in critical condition but “stable enough to be taken into surgery for his injury to his leg.”
Cuts will have local impact on middle class, critics say
Dayton City Commissioner Nan Whaley and a retired local teacher criticized Congress on Thursday, saying the sequestration budget cuts will unnecessarily harm middle class and poor residents in the Miami Valley.
Whaley ran off a list of projected Ohio impacts, most of them from White House estimates — that Ohio would lose $25 million in K-12 education funding, that 4,700 low-income families would lose rental housing vouchers, and that $161 million in wages will disappear from the state’s economy due to furloughs at military bases like Wright-Patterson.
