PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA DELIVERED HIS STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS TO A JOINT SESSION OF CONGRESS LAST NIGHT, PRESSING LAWMAKERS TO AGREE ON MEASURES TO SIMPLIFY THE U.S. TAX CODE, TOUGHEN GUN RESTRICTIONS, OVERHAUL IMMIGRATION LAWS, AND RAISE THE FEDERAL MINIMUM WAGE. THE PRESIDENT ALSO MADE CLEAR HIS U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY WOULD ADOPT RULES TO CURB EMISSIONS OF GREENHOUSE GASSES FROM INDUSTRIES AND POWER PLANTS, SAYS THE NEWS SUN. OBAMA ALSO TOLD CONGRESS OF HIS PLAN TO HAVE 34,000 AMERICAN TROOPS WITHDRAWING FROM AFGHANISTAN OVER THE NEXT YEAR.
THE DAYTON DAILY NEWS REPORTS AT LAST NIGHT’S MIAMI TOWNSHIP BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING, OVER 200 PEOPLE CAME OUT, MANY TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR THE MIAMI TOWNSHIP POLICE DEPARTMENT. AFTER THE FAILURE OF THE 5-MILL POLICE LEVY IN MIAMI TOWNSHIP LAST NOVEMBER, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES HAVE BEEN EXPLORING WAYS TO SAVE MONEY ON POLICE SERVICES, ONE WAY THE POTENTIAL CONTRACTING OF POLICE SERVICES WITH THE MONTGOMERY SHERIFF’S OFFICE, ALTHOUGH BOARD PRESIDENT DEBORAH PRESTON DID SAY SHE WANTS TO KEEP THE MIAMI TOWNSHIP POLICE DEPARTMENT INTACT. THE TRUSTEES HAVE PLACED A 5 AND A QUARTER-MILL POLICE LEVY ON THIS MAY’S ELECTION BALLOT, AND ALL FEEL THE NEED TO PASS THIS LEVY TO MAINTAIN POLICE SERVICES IN MIAMI TOWNSHIP.
OHIO STATE AUDITOR DAVE YOST ANNOUNCES TUESDAY 4 MORE OHIO SCHOOL DISTRICTS MANIPULATED THEIR STUDENT DATA, FEDERAL OFFICIALS WILL NOW RECEIVE THE FINDINGS, SAYS THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH. THE NUMBER HAS GROWN TO 9 AS THE NUMBER OF DISTRICTS THE AUDITOR HAS IDENTIFIED AS HAVING “SCRUBBED” STUDENT DATA ALLEGEDLY TO INFLATE THEIR STATE REPORT-CARD GRADES, OHIO HAVING 614 SCHOOL DISTRICTS, WITH NORTHRIDGE IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY AND SCHOOLS IN COLUMBUS NAMED AMONG THOSE SCHOOLS.
OHIO STATE FAIR TO OFFER MORE THAN $20,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS
COLUMBUS – The Ohio State Fair offers scholarships to high school students and recent graduates in an effort to recognize their accomplishments as junior fair exhibitors. Applications for the 2013 scholarships are currently available online at ohiostatefair.com.
High school juniors and seniors during the current (2012-2013) academic year, as well as recent high school graduates who are continuing their education at an accredited institution in an undergraduate course of study in any field, are eligible to apply on or before June 15, 2013.
Applicants will be judged on scholastic standing, citizenship and leadership, Ohio State Fair participation, county fair participation and financial need. Scholarships will be presented during the Sale of Champions at the Ohio State Fair held on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013.
During the 2012 Ohio State Fair, 21 outstanding youth were awarded with $16,500 total in scholarships funded by endowments and the Youth Reserve Program.
