Marie’s Candies to be featured at Urbana event (FROM URBANA DAILY CITIZEN)
Marie’s Candies immersed itself in history when it moved the old train depot to its existing retail site in West Liberty and began using it to feature an array of sweet treats.
On Sunday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m., the Champaign County Historical Society Museum will feature one local family’s triumph over adversity which resulted in – pun intended – one of the sweetest success stories in west central Ohio. The museum is located in Urbana on East Lawn Avenue.
Kathy King will recount the development of Marie’s Candies from its inception in the family kitchen to an area legend for delicious goodies.
The story of Marie’s Candies began in 1956, long before a historic train depot entered the picture. Marie and Winfred started making chocolates in their farm home on state Route 508 after an illness sidelined Winfred from his farming career.
Jay, second son of Marie and Winfred, took over day-to-day operations of Marie’s Candies after Winfred died in 1973. He and his wife, Kathy (who is a registered nurse) continued to carry on the business in the 1980s and 1990s and began to dream of expanding the retail space.
Together with much advice from Steve Gray, architect, they realized the goal of remodeling and renovating the 1926 historic West Liberty train depot into a retail candy store and opened it for sales in November 1996.
