FLU, OTHER DISEASES NOTICEABLY UP THIS YEAR

The worst influenza season in a decade has walloped Clark County, but health officials also warn the area is facing outbreaks of the norovirus and whooping cough.

Officials confirmed cases of both the norovirus and pertussis/whooping cough in Clark County, which has also seen the largest number of hospitalizations as a result of the flu in nearly 10 years, according to officials with the Clark County Health District.

ABSENTEEISM AT SCHOOL, WORK, SAME AS USUAL THOUGH

(FROM NEWS SUN) Most area schools and workplaces have so far avoided the widespread absenteeism plaguing some parts of the country ravaged by one of the worst flu seasons in a decade, based on an informal survey Monday of local employers, health departments and school districts. A handful of local employers say it hasn’t been any worse than previous years, despite a dramatic statewide increase in flu-related emergency department visits and hospitalizations, which already have climbed to 1,922 so far this season – more than six times higher than total hospitalizations for the previous two seasons combined.
